Mattress Options
And Other bedding considerations
Sleep is important, especially when camping. We've all had those sleepless nights on a slowly deflating pad or a blown-out Z-lite, wishing the sun would rise to make the tossing and turning end. That sucks, and we don't want it to happen to you in the camper. Below is a bunch of information on our mattress options along with dimensions if you want to figure out your own mattress solution.
Explaining The Cabover and Bed-Slide:
The cabover of your camper is the bit that hangs "over" the "cab", obviously. In the cabover is a sliding-platform that pulls out to give you the full bed when you're ready to snooze. This "bed-slide" pulls out 40" to give you a guaranteed 80" of head-to-toe sleeping space in every camper (except Bivys, we'll touch on those later). If you don't want or need 80" of length, we can cut your bed-slide down to whatever dimension you'd prefer!
We can do an 8", 10" or 11" tall cabover. Each cabover height offers a different amount of space for your bedding and such. The "floor" of the cabover is 1.25" thick and the bed-slide that rests up there when it is stowed and is 1.25" thick, leaving you with the following storage space in each cabover:
8" Cabover - 5" of bedding (Two 2.5" mattresses stacked)
10" Cabover - 7" of bedding (Two 3" mattresses stacked + some bedding)
11" Cabover - 8" of bedding (Two 4" mattresses stacked, or 3" + a ton of bedding)
There’s a bit of wiggle room and you can cheat it by leaving your bed-slide pulled out slightly to act as a shelf for extra bedding or to pull a too-thick mattress back away from the front lift panel (mechanism that opens the roof).
Lots of people ask “will I notice an MPG difference between the different cabover heights?” and the answer is “probably not”. Some folks like the lower profile look of the 8". The 10” is the sweet spot we’ve found that looks good on most trucks and provides a good amount of bedding storage. The 11" unlocks that elusive 4" mattress.
Custom to Your Camper
OVRLND's Custom Fitted Mattress
Our mattresses are made by our old shop manager, Matt! Made locally by a guy with intimate knowledge of the campers. He lived in his camper for years while helping to grow OVRLND into what we are now!
These mattresses are available in either medium-firm or firm and are sized to fit your camper. If you want your bed-slide cut down for 74" of sleeping area, he'll cut your mattress to match! We offer the following sizes:
2.5" Mattress - $550 (medium-firm or firm)
3" Mattress - $625 (medium-firm or firm)
4" Mattress - $700 (medium-firm ONLY)
We usually have a bunch of mattresses on hand at the shop*, so if you want to wait and check them out when you're here you can. Lay on the different options, and choose the one that best suits you.
Matt can also do custom pads for your build out! If you're looking for some matching cushions for a lower bench or spot for your dog, just shoot us an email with the desired dimensions and thickness/firmness and we'll get you a quote!
*Please note, if you cut your bed-slide down your mattress will need to be ordered with your camper as it's now a custom order, as well as 4" mattress are only available as custom orders for 11" cabovers
Premium option for premium sleep
Hest Mattresses
You've probably heard of these guys. Mainly known for their car camping and van mattresses, these guys make some seriously comfy stuff. Memory foam that won't freeze and a tri-fold design, if you're looking for a plush experience this might be for you. They're definitely softer, I'd call them soft to medium, whereas our mattresses are medium to firm. These are not as custom a fit for the campers as our own mattresses, but they sure are comfortable. All Hest mattresses are 4" thick, so we recommend going with an 11" cabover. Reference the photos below to see how a Hest Duallys fit in the campers.
Dually 6078H (60" x 78"): $679 - Midsize Standard Campers
Dually 6678H (66" x 78"): $749 - Midsize Chubby and Full-Size Standard Campers
Dually Long + Foamy (75" x 78"): $908 - Full-Size Chubby Campers***
***A note on the Dually Long + Foamy Combo: This will work, but it folds "hotdog" instead of "hamburger" so you will be folding it against the grain to close the camper. Shouldn't be a problem, might just be something to get used to while you figure out a system that works well for you. See what I mean here.
-
The Bed-Slide will need to be left pulled out ~8" to accomodate a Hest Dually when the camper roof is closed.
-
Since Hest mattresses are 78" long, we can cut 3" off the bed-slide if you want a more flush fit.
-
The Hest Dually is a tri-fold
